Get to Know Dr. Katherine Tan
Committed To Compassionate Care
As a caring dentist, Dr. Tan believes in building genuine connections with her patients. She is all about personalized care and making sure you feel right at home in her office.
Dr. Tan earned her Bachelor’s degree at the University of California, Berkeley, and Doctor of Dental Medicine degree at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston. She started her dental journey in her hometown of Sacramento where she practiced for several years. She moved to San Diego at the end of 2020 when she married her husband, who is a San Diego native.
Dr. Tan is dedicated to being a lifelong learner and is a member of the American Dental Association, California Dental Association, San Diego County Dental Society, and Academy of General Dentistry.
Outside of the office, Dr. Tan and her husband share a joy for culinary exploration. They are both foodies at heart, constantly on the lookout for tasty bites at local restaurants or experimenting with new recipes at home. If you’ve got any recommendations, Dr. Tan would love to hear them!

What to expect
Your First Visit
Comforting Care For All Ages
First, you'll check in with our front desk team member, then relax in one of our comfy couches in our reception area. We’ll bring you back to an operating room for your appointment. Dr. Tan will take X-rays and perform a comprehensive oral exam to check your dental health.
As long as everything looks good, Dr. Tan will then clean and polish your teeth, and send you back to the front desk to schedule your next six-month visit.
However, if Dr. Tan notices any major oral health issues, she will discuss them with you right away. These may need to be resolved before you get a cleaning. Dr. Tan will explain all of your treatment options, and their pros and cons. Together, you can come up with a treatment plan that fits into your schedule, budget, and lifestyle!

We make things simple at Friendly Family Dental. Coming in for your first visit? All you’ll need is:

- Dental records and health history, if available

Digital X-rays
Compared to traditional film X-rays, digital X-rays have tons of benefits. They're faster, expose you to less radiation, and provide a better overall image of your oral health.
iTero Intraoral Scanner
Our iTero intraoral scanner lets us take digital “impressions” of your teeth when planning treatments like crowns or bridges. This allows patients to avoid goopy, uncomfortable putty-based dental impressions!
Warm Fluffy Blankets
Chilly? Ask for a blanket and get cozy in one of our comfortable dental chairs. You’ll want to turn your exam time into naptime!
Neck Pillows
During appointments, we also offer neck pillows to support your neck and head. That’s just another way that we go the extra mile to keep each patient comfortable.
